A Student-Centered Approach

Welcome to my teaching philosophy! Here, you'll discover the core principles and values that guide my approach to education. I am committed to creating a supportive and engaging learning environment where every student can thrive. Explore my beliefs, experiences, and inspirations that shape my teaching style.

My name is Olivia Hess, and I am seeking employment as an elementary education teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. I am a devoted, creative, and organized educator with a passion for fostering student growth and creating a positive classroom environment. I am currently completing my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), with expected graduation in May 2025.

During my student teaching and field experiences, I have had the opportunity to work with diverse learners across multiple grade levels. I was placed at Ellis Elementary School in Belleville, IL, where I designed and delivered lessons across core subject areas, differentiated instruction to meet students’ varied abilities, and collaborated closely with my cooperating teacher on planning, assessment, and classroom management. I also completed observation and practicum placements at Henning Elementary School and was lucky enough to be placed again at Kreitner Elementary School for my current student teaching, where I am gaining further hands-on experience in lesson delivery, classroom management, and building positive student relationships. Throughout these experiences, I have worked with students with IEPs, 504 plans, and English Language Learners, ensuring that all learners receive the support they need to succeed.

In addition to my student teaching, I have worked as an Assistant Teacher at Pals Preschool and Daycare in Highland, IL, where I supported infants through pre-K students, assisted with daily routines, implemented age-appropriate activities, and collaborated with lead teachers to provide a nurturing, safe, and engaging learning environment.

I am committed to creating a classroom that feels like a family, where every student feels comfortable, safe, and empowered to grow academically and socially. I am skilled in lesson planning, classroom management, and differentiated instruction, and I am eager to bring my dedication and creativity to a school community.

Core Beliefs

I believe that every student deserves a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment where they feel valued and part of a classroom family. I am guided by the belief that learning should be engaging, meaningful, and hands-on, helping students build both knowledge and confidence. I also value fostering curiosity, creativity, and respect, while encouraging each student to reach their full potential.

Making a Difference

Nothing beats seeing a student’s face light up when a challenging concept finally clicks. I have experienced that excitement in their eyes many times throughout the lessons I’ve taught, and those moments remind me why teaching is so rewarding. Being able to guide a student through a difficult topic and witness their growth is when I feel I truly make a difference in their learning experience.

An Inspiring Mentor

I truly admire my mentor teacher at Kreitner. She embodies everything I aspire to become as an educator. She is fun, engaging, and makes teaching look effortless! She has an incredible ability to connect with her students and keep them engaged. Walking into her classroom feels like entering a family—her students know they are supported and valued. She is deeply involved not only in her students’ lives but also in the community. She always ensures her lessons are meaningful and memorable, leaving a lasting impact on every student she teaches.
