Creating a positive classroom
In my classroom, we are a family. I want every student to feel respected, valued, and safe to be themselves. My approach isn’t just about rules or consequences—it’s about building strong relationships, being consistent, and creating a community where everyone supports each other. I expect my students to treat each other (and me!) with kindness and fairness. When students feel connected and respected, they are more willing to take risks, make mistakes, and grow as learners.
Frequently asked questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about classroom management, based on my experience and insights. These questions address common challenges and effective strategies for educators.
What's the biggest challenge teachers face in managing their classrooms today?
Teachers today do an amazing job supporting the wide range of social-emotional and academic needs their students bring to the classroom. Even with challenges like anxiety, trauma, or trouble regulating emotions, they continue to show patience, compassion, and flexibility. In my future classroom, I plan to follow their example by creating a positive, supportive environment where all students feel valued. Today’s teachers also manage different learning levels and technology distractions with creativity and confidence, which inspires me. While classroom management can be complex, I see it as an opportunity to build strong relationships and help every student grow.
If a teacher uses your classroom management strategies, what's the single most important change they'll see in their classroom?
The biggest change a teacher will see when using my classroom management strategies is a stronger sense of community. When students feel safe, supported, and connected—to me and to each other—they naturally become more engaged, more responsible, and more confident in their learning. A positive classroom community creates the foundation for smooth routines, respectful behavior, and meaningful academic growth, and that’s exactly what my strategies are designed to build.
In your experience, what's one surprisingly effective technique for creating a positive classroom environment?
In my experience, one surprisingly effective way to create a positive classroom environment is treating students with the same respect I expect from them. Consistent rules that match school expectations also help students know exactly what to follow. Most importantly, reminding students that we are a classroom family encourages kindness, belonging, and stronger relationships.
What makes your approach to classroom management different from what's already out there?
My approach focuses on building a classroom family where every student feels respected, valued, and connected. Rather than relying solely on rules and consequences, I prioritize relationships, consistency, and a sense of community. I expect everyone—students and teachers alike—to treat each other with kindness and fairness. By creating an environment where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and support one another, learning becomes more meaningful and collaborative
